May 18, 2008 : The Amadeus Choir
|

|
Founded 31 years ago, the Amadeus Choir, currently under the direction of Conductor and Artistic director Lydia Adams, is in its thirteenth season as Choir-in-Residence at the George Weston Recital Hall, Toronto Centre for the Arts. The Choir has become known for its professionalism, exceptional musicality, diverse, high-quality programming, and warm beautiful sound, all a reflection of the leadership provided by Dr. Adams. During her 21 years as Conductor and Artistic Director, the Choir has grown significantly in size and reputation to become one of Canada's pre-eminent choral groups. The 100 auditioned members of the Choir perform a regular series of concerts in the Recital Hall, as well as at carefully selected downtown venues, presenting well known artists in works by Canadian and international composers, including major works with instrumental ensembles or full orchestra, as well as challenging a capella performances.

In addition to the Amadeus Choir's regular concert series, the Choir takes an active role in Ontario's choral community by working in collaboration with other prominent local ensembles, such as the Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Hannaford Street Silver Band, Salvation Army North York Temple Band , Brantford Symphony, Elmer Iseler Singers, The Bach Children's Chorus, Toronto's Children's Chorus and NEXUS. The Choir regularly performs benefit concerts and is actively involved in fundraising and other volunteer efforts. The Amadeus Choir also competed in the prestigious biennial CBC Choral Competition, where it won awards in 1992, 1994 and 1996, before becoming ineligible due to its semi-professional status.

In 2000, the singers travelled to Alberta on their first tour, and were warmly received at each of their concerts. They performed at two major festivals, and took the opportunity to launch their CD, Songs of the Spirit, featuring works by Canadian composers Eleanor Daley, Srul Irving Glick and Barry Peters, and the premiere recording of a work by Andrea Gabrieli which had just come to light after 300 years. This CD was given the Outstanding Choral Recording Award for 2001-2002 by the Association of Choral Conductors.

The Savoy Theatre and St. Paul's Presbyterian Church are pleased to present the Amadeus Choir on Sunday, May 18th.

May 20, 2008 : Leonard Cohen
|

|
Leonard Cohen is arguably the greatest singer songwriter of modern times. At his recent induction into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame, he was recognized by Lou Reed as, 'Without question one of the most important and influential songwriters of our time, a figure whose body of work achieves greater mystery and depth as time goes on.' Among those inducted with Cohen were Madonna, John Mellencamp The Dave Clark Five, and the Ventures.

His songs have been famously covered by the great and the good, each version a fascinating attempt to move closer to Cohen's enigmatic muse. From Judy Collins' 'Suzanne' to Jeff Buckley's seminal rendition of 'Hallelujah,' Cohen's songs have traveled as far and wide as their author. U2, REM, Sting, Nick Cave, Rufus Wainwright and the late Johnny Cash are among other famous devotees. It is estimated that his songbook has been covered over 1,330 times by other recording artists.

For many this tour will be the once in a lifetime opportunity to see the legend that is Leonard Cohen. The Savoy is honoured to bring this long rumored tour to Cape Breton.

Leonard Cohen will be joined by world renowned musicians: Roscoe Beck (bass & vocals, music director) Neil Larsen (keyboard, accordion, brass instruments), Bob Metzger (guitar, steel guitar & vocals), Javier Mas (acoustic guitar, oud & misc. string instruments), Christine Wu (violin, viola, cello & keyboard), Rafael Gayol (drums & percussion) and Dino Soldo (keyboard, saxophone, wind instruments & vocals).

Cohen is beyond comparison and a true original, providing some of music and literature's most illuminating writing on love, sex, death and religion.

This is a world tour of epic proportions, but it is something even more than that. Leonard Cohen's eagerly anticipated return to the stage after all these years is nothing short of musical history in the making.

June 2, 2008 : Derek Edwards
|

|
Derek Edwards’ new one-man show, The Other Shoe Drops, is a riotously funny 90-minute ‘unguarded moment’ with a Canadian comic icon. With his unique curve ball delivery and inimitable quirky perspective, Edwards probes the Myth of Maturity ... peeling back the carpet/façade of Adult Behaviour to reveal the perfectly good hardwood floor of truth and belly laughs. The most recent Just for Laughs Festival hailed Edwards as a 'a virtuoso at the peak of performance', echoing the kudos of critics across the country:

'5 STARS - the funniest man on Earth' - Winnipeg Free Press

'4 STARS - a first-rate comic...the crowd howled' - Victoria Times Colonist

'one of the top comic talents in our country' - Charlottetown Guardian

'the epitome of timing & storytelling'- Halifax Chronicle Herald

'the comedian’s comedian' - London Free Press

'Derek Edwards is hysterical' - Calgary Sun

'Edwards takes stand-up to next stage' - Georgia Straight

'a master of the craft' - Summerside Journal-Pioneer

July 10, 2008 : The Strawberry Jam
|

|
Can you have toast without jam?

Can you have a peanut butter and jam sandwich without jam?

Can you have rock'n'roll without jam?

The answer to all of these questions is an emphatic 'NO!' and we’re left wondering how (supposed) rock'n'roll has gotten on so long without hip-shaking, hit-making Brits, The Strawberry Jam. United by a love of the spirit and sounds of bygone years, the band was birthed in a suburban London garage by childhood friends Nathan Noblett and Jerry 'Yorkshire' Pudding. Enlisting the services of co-worker (at a sheet-metal factory) and vocalist Wayne Roach with Wayne’s cousin John Elizabeth on the bass, the band decided to pool their resources and record a single, 'Strawberry Jam' which was released with a limited UK pressing in 2006. The band split up shortly thereafter only to regroup one year later, having been discovered by manager Yuri Tchekov who in a short time procured them a record contract with the Canadian record label Feret Hole Records.

The Strawberry Jam will be hosting this massive concert to promote their 2nd album which they will be in the country recording that very same week. The band will be recording in Cape Breton’s own The Feret Hole Recording Studios. A rock show for the ears, eyes and yes, tongue filled with new material and all the hits you already know. It is an event NOT TO BE MISSED!

Psychedelia, epitomic rock numbers, sweet-as-jam folk songs, catchy British pop, The Strawberry Jam represent music as it was and should be. Unmistakably reminiscent of THE KINKS, THE WHO, THE BEATLES and THE SMALL FACES, if you're looking for a superb 1960's rock band, 'The Strawberry Jam' is it.
