Behind the Red Curtain: The Ghosts of the Savoy

It might interest you to know that when the audience goes home and the stage lights go dark, the Savoy Theatre becomes a very different place.

The sounds are different when the building is empty. The old roof stretches and strains in the wind, and the catwalk high above the stage creaks with every gust. Every now and then, a door slams somewhere in the building. An empty theatre seat squeaks. A light flickers or goes out for no apparent reason.

And then there are the smells.

A trace of perfume where there was none a moment before. The unmistakable scent of a gentleman wearing a little too much Old Spice. They come and go just as quickly, with nobody around to explain them.

Spend enough time alone in the Savoy, and you begin to understand why people sometimes talk about the building as though it has a life of its own.

The Savoy has been standing in the heart of Glace Bay for nearly a century, so it’s safe to say a building that old collects more than a little history. It collects stories, memories… and, depending on who you ask, maybe a few things that never quite left.

On Friday, October 30, we’re opening the doors for an evening that takes you beyond the stage, behind the curtain, and into spaces most people never get to see.

From 6–9 PM, guests will take a historical ghost tour through the Savoy, including backstage and downstairs areas, with stories from the theatre’s past and a few unexplained tales that have lingered right along with them.

But the tour is only part of the night.

The Savoy lobby will be transformed into a vendor market, with psychic readings available for those brave enough to ask the questions. Our bar will be open with a specialty drink created for the evening, a photo booth on site, and outside we’ll have a food truck and fire entertainment open to the community. The psychic readings and photo booth will have an additional cash only fee the night of the event.

The Celtic Witches of Cape Breton will also take to the Savoy stage for a special Witches Dance.
