The
expansion of the Savoy officially opened on June 5th, 1998. One of the
main purposes of the expansion was to provide the Savoy with a facility
that enabled the Theatre to operate more efficiently and offer a wider
variety of programs and services to the community. The features of the
new Savoy include the addition of a much-expanded lobby, which may also
be used as a second performance space, accommodating approximately 150
people.
The
box office area now features a state of the art computerized ticketing
system easily accessible to patrons. The Kitchen and Bar facilities were
added to allow for in house catering for a wide variety of functions.
The second level of our new addition consists of a small gallery,
administration area as well as a meeting room, which overlook the lobby
area. We have been extremely pleased with our expanded facility, and
have received many favourable comments from the community. The
Studio/Lobby area has allowed us to offer a number of programs such as
Dinner Theatre performances and cabarets featuring many local artists.
Being the Regional Theatre for Cape Breton, the Savoy now has the
extended facilities to operate as a Cultural Centre featuring a wide
variety of programs and services to the community.
Two
Million of the total funding for the expansion was provided through the
Canada/Nova Scotia Cooperation Agreement on Economic Diversification --
Strategic Diversification Program. Additional funding was provided from
Enterprise Cape Breton Corporation and the Cape Breton Regional
Municipality.
The
remainder of the funding to complete the project was generated through
the generous donations from business and individuals throughout the
community and through funds generated from the theatre itself.
In
this past year since the completion of the renovations has been a
challenging one as we continue to develop our programs as well as our
audience to support the new Savoy. Please read all about the Savoy
Theatre Society.
